There is something very fresh about Orchard Opera, but it’s not just that the singers are at that stage in their careers when youthful energy is so appealing when allied to talent and training. It’s also that they make such a virtue of simplicity. With minimal stage settings and costumes and a portable piano acting as orchestra, their selections of musical drama are delivered with a conviction that sweeps all else aside. For the spellbound audience, the surroundings disappear. Just as impressive is the range of scenes presented, balancing the familiar and the recherché with the addition of some rare laugh-out-loud comedy. The spoken introductions are also nicely judged.

Orchard Opera performed a gala concert for my 70th birthday this summer. Their professionalism and organisation were just marvellous, and they were efficient with following all the covid guidelines which put me quite at ease. It’s only a pity that we couldn’t have had a larger audience for them. Poppy was very helpful over email prior to the event, and on the day. Musical highlights for me included Alex and Poppy’s beautiful La ci darem la mano, and Guy’s absolutely brilliant piano playing throughout. I particularly appreciated Poppy’s help in choosing the repertoire for the concert, and being able to request some of my favourite arias. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Orchard Opera to anyone, and thank you for helping make my birthday such a very special event this year.
